Milwaukee Community Journal
The
Milwaukee Community Journal is a local newspaper that keeps Milwaukee citizens
informed and up to date with local and national news. On their website, as well as throughout their
articles, you will find items that include local scholarship opportunities,
healthy living options, as well as support for local businesses. The newspaper also offers various
opportunities for local schools to learn more about literacy. The newspaper
editor travels to schools and holds discussions with students about the
importance of literacy, as well as how students can use the newspaper as an
asset to finding things within their community. Overall, the paper generally
focuses on African American lifestyles, but they also provide resources that
are helpful to the entire community.
One link
that particularly caught our eye was the local news books section. This section provides multiple resources that
guide students to popular books, provide them with study tips, as well as gives
them a peak inside an author’s life.
This would be a great place for teachers to direct their students if
they want them to become more involved with local literacy.
